The FreeWare PC game that's making it's impact on the gaming.
CaveStory
So here we are with Doukutsu Monogatari or CaveStory as us Americans know it to be called. The man behind the game that independently made it all happen is Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya. The game was released as a freeware PC download on Dec. 4, 2004 single handedly done by Daisuke Amaya A.K.A Pixel, Amaya decided to name the studio that he produced this game under as Pixel as well. Amaya was working on CaveStory for a good five years until he was able to have if finished and ready to be played. With that said you must take to mind that this game's origins go back as far as 1999, had it been released around then I have no doubt in my mind that CaveStory would be in the same league of popularity as Mario (Nintendo) and Sonic (Sega). The game starts with a man trapped in a small emptyish room messaging someone on his computer, all that's really evident at this time is that the man in the room needs help. This opening proves to be very vague in the begining but as the story picks up it makes sense and you end up saving this man, Kazuma, from the room he's stuck in.
CaveStory is like a cross between platform Mario games and action-platform Metriod games. The sense of exploration you get through playing CaveStory feels similar to that of how the Metroid and Castelvania series play what with all the back tracking, level grinding, and the and secrets. CaveStory is just jotted full of secrets from pretty much the beginning to end with secrets ranging from weapons, areas, and even a few jokes. CaveStory is on it's great rise to popularity and it's nearly just as known as more popular series like Sonic, Mario, Metriod, Castelvainia, and Megaman.
CaveStory has unofficial ports for nearly every platform of gaming out there, most of which can be found here at CaveStory's largest English tribute site.

On top of these ports there is also a WiiWare version, CaveStory+ which is available to through this year's Humble Bundle (http://www.humblebundle.com/ LIMITED TIME OFFER), and there is soon to be a 3DS remake. Being the great big fan boy that I am I've got this game on my computer, DSi, Wii, I own CaveStory+ (thanks to the HumbleBundle), and I intend on buying CaveStory plus once it comes out!

The protagonist!
This little dude right here is Quote, he's CaveStory's silent protagonist with a cliché amnesia dilema. He's a little cyborg who wakes up in a cave not knowing where he is. Quote wanders through this cave a bit and ends up taking a gun (Polar Star) from a sleeping old man. Once out of the cave Quote falls right in betweenKing and Toroko, Mimigas or bunny people, while in the middle of a heated conversation. After finding a sliver locket in the water Quote finds Toroko and king at it again. This time around more of the story is hinted at as King asks Toroko for a key only to have Toroko runaway. After finding Toroko in a little house she is kidnapped by Misery and Balrog, the Doctor's two baddies. Balrog stays behind and you have the option to fight him then. There's mention of a doctor with red flowers snatching up Mimiga's and turning them into monsters or labor slaves, whichever he sees most fit, this is the initial drive that your character has in the game. Save the Mimiga people and find Kazuma's sister Sue whom is said to be a new Mimiga in the village. The village at this point has had so many Mimiga.
According to the story Quote is one of many "armed recon robots" that was sent to this floating island ten years ago. Quote and the other robots went on a mad killing spree nearly causing genocide to the inhabitants of the floating island, the mimgas. The mimigas being the peaceful bunny-thing they are couldn't fight back. Around this time of battle the mimigas came to understand that by consuming a certain cursed red flower they'd gain immense strength but little did they know that the flowers also put their lives at risk too. It's been 10years since then and now Quote has woken up and is on a search to uncover his past all while trying to save Sue and the mimigas from the Doctor and the powers granted to him by the DemonCrown.
I don't want to give out too much of the story and spoilers (considering I've already spewed out like five so far) though so you'll just have to play the game to see how things go from there!

One last thing, I'm a fan of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic and with that said I just HAD to put that pic of ponified Quote in here.

Balrog!
Balrog is considered the comic relief villain, he's goofy in the way that he yells "HUZZAH!!!" when busting through the wall like the Kool-Aid man. At one point in the game Balrog actually tricks himself into almost helping you out. Of course after getting his butt kicked Balrog agrees to just help you because he's that silly. If there's anything that's ever really bothered me about Balrog it would be his origins. Now although he looks like he'd be a toaster or something Amaya has actually said that Balrog was modeled after a bar of soap.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qm7LSQM9Cdc
That video is not the source of Amaya's announcement but instead a little joke on the fact that Balrog is a bar of soap.
